Most guides to restaurant SEO in India stop at "optimize your Google Business Profile and get reviews," and that advice isn't wrong, it's just half the job. The other half is the restaurant's own website: a PDF menu Google can't read, no Restaurant schema telling Google or an AI assistant what you actually serve, and zero thought given to whether ChatGPT or Perplexity can find you when someone asks for a recommendation instead of typing it into Google.

What actually drives a restaurant's local ranking?
Three things, per Google's own local-ranking guidance: relevance (does your profile match what someone searched), distance (how close you are to the searcher), and prominence (how well-known and well-reviewed you are). You can't do much about distance, and relevance mostly comes down to picking the right category and keeping your menu accurate. Prominence is where the real work is, and reviews are the biggest lever inside it, covered in full in do Google reviews affect local SEO ranking. This post covers everything around that: the profile setup, the citations, the website, and the part almost nobody in India is writing about yet, AI search.
Is your Google Business Profile actually set up right?
Get the basics exact: your restaurant's real legal name (not "Best Biryani Point - Order Now"), the correct primary category (a specific cuisine category beats the generic "Restaurant" category when one fits), accurate hours including holiday closures, and photos that are actually of your food and space, not stock images. The one mistake specific to restaurants: a text-based digital menu linked from your profile reads and ranks better than a PDF or an image, because Google can actually parse text. If your only menu is a photograph of a printed card, that's the first thing to fix, before reviews, before anything else.
If you run more than one outlet, each location needs its own profile and, ideally, its own page on your website. A single generic page trying to represent five branches across a city dilutes relevance for all of them; a customer searching "biryani near Koramangala" should land on a page that's actually about your Koramangala outlet.
Do JustDial and your delivery-app listings need to match Google?
Yes, and this is where Indian restaurants specifically lose ranking without noticing. Your name, address, phone number, and cuisine category need to match, word for word, across Google, JustDial, Zomato, and Swiggy. Local business citations in India covers why this consistency matters and how to fix it once it's drifted, which is common once a restaurant has changed phone numbers or moved locations and only updated some of its listings.
Does your website need schema markup, or is the Business Profile enough?
The profile handles Maps and the local pack. Your website is a separate surface, and most restaurant sites skip the one thing that would help there: structured data. Schema.org has a Restaurant type (a subtype of FoodEstablishment) built specifically for this, plus Menu, MenuSection, and MenuItem types for marking up what you actually serve, with prices, in a format Google and AI assistants can parse directly instead of guessing from a page full of styled <div>s. Add it once, alongside your cuisine type, price range, and service area, and it works passively from then on. We cover the general mechanics in how to add schema markup without code; for a restaurant, the menu markup is the part worth doing first.
Does AI search even know your restaurant exists?
This is the part every restaurant-SEO guide aimed at the Indian market currently skips. When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for a dinner recommendation instead of typing a search into Google, that answer draws on crawlable web content, your schema, your menu text, your reviews, not a separate database. AI crawlers like GPTBot, PerplexityBot, and ClaudeBot (among others) need to actually be able to reach and read your site for that to happen; a menu locked inside an image or blocked by an overly broad robots.txt rule is invisible to them the same way it's invisible to Google. Are you in ChatGPT? walks through how to check whether AI assistants can actually see and describe your restaurant, rather than assuming they can.
What does restaurant SEO actually cost in India?
For a single-location restaurant, local freelancers typically quote in the ₹8,000 to 15,000 a month range covered in what's a fair SEO retainer in India, mostly for profile upkeep, review responses, and basic on-page fixes. Multi-outlet restaurants and chains sit higher, since every location needs its own profile, its own page, and consistent citations.
Most of that work doesn't need a person on retainer to find. Fixing a PDF-only menu, adding schema, and getting your profile category right is a focused afternoon, not an ongoing engagement. Finding what's actually broken, missing schema, a menu Google can't read, inconsistent citations, is mechanical work a free tool now does in about a minute: run a free SEO audit and it lists exactly what to fix, in plain language, before you pay anyone to find the same list by hand. If you want that checked continuously with reporting, Starter runs ₹2,499 a month for one site, and Growth (₹4,999 a month, three sites) adds white-label reporting if you're managing SEO across more than one location or client restaurant.
When should a restaurant skip most of this?
If you're a single small outlet relying entirely on walk-ins in a neighborhood with little competition, a full SEO push is probably not the best use of your time yet. Get the Google Business Profile right (correct category, real menu, real photos), keep your JustDial and delivery-app listings matching it, and stop there until you're either opening a second location or noticing competitors consistently outranking you in the local pack.
Your first 30 days, in order
- Fix your Google Business Profile: correct category, complete hours, a text-based menu instead of a PDF or photo.
- Match your name, address, phone number, and category exactly across Google, JustDial, Zomato, and Swiggy.
- Add
RestaurantandMenuschema to your website so Google and AI assistants can read what you actually serve. - If you run more than one outlet, give each its own Business Profile and its own website page.
- Run a free audit of your website and fix whatever it flags as critical first.
Frequently asked questions
How is SEO for restaurants different from SEO for other local businesses?
The mechanics are the same three factors (relevance, distance, prominence), but restaurants have a menu to structure and a much heavier presence on food-delivery platforms that need to stay in sync with Google. Getting the menu machine-readable, as text and as schema, is the restaurant-specific step most local-SEO advice skips.
Do I need a website if my restaurant is already on Zomato and Swiggy?
You don't need one to take orders, aggregators handle that, but a website is the only place you control that can carry structured data (schema) and rank for searches your aggregator listing can't own, like your restaurant's name plus "menu." It also gives AI search assistants a source to read from.
What's the fastest first fix for a restaurant's SEO?
Replacing a PDF or photo menu with a real, readable text menu, on both your Google Business Profile and your website. It's free, it takes an afternoon, and it's the single most common gap we see when auditing restaurant sites.
Is SEO worth it for a small, single-location restaurant?
The free, structural parts, an accurate Business Profile, matching listings, a readable menu, are worth doing regardless of size. A fuller push, schema, content, ongoing monitoring, becomes worth paying for once you're competing for the same searches as several other restaurants in your immediate area.
