If you've read anything about local SEO, you've probably seen the word "citation" tossed around without much explanation. A citation is simple: it's any mention of your business's name, address and phone number (your NAP) on another website, a directory, a chamber of commerce page, an old listing you forgot existed. For an India-based business, citations are still one of the cheapest, most overlooked local SEO wins, and JustDial is usually the first one people ask about.
What do citations actually do?
Google doesn't just trust what you say about your own business. It cross-checks your name, address and phone number against how they appear everywhere else on the web. When ten different directories agree on the same NAP details, that consistency is a trust signal telling Google you're a real, stable business at a real location. When your address is "MG Road" on one site and "M.G Road, Bangalore" on another, that's noise Google has to resolve, and inconsistent noise doesn't help you rank.
This sits alongside, not instead of, the basics we cover in what is local SEO. Your Google Business Profile does the heavy lifting for the map pack, and citations reinforce it.
Where does JustDial actually fit in 2026?
JustDial, along with Sulekha and IndiaMART, is still a Tier-1 India-specific citation source, and most local-SEO checklists for Indian businesses still list it as close to essential. But it's worth being precise about what that means: JustDial is not a peer to Google Business Profile anymore. GBP and Google Maps have taken over the bulk of actual discovery. The "plumber near me" searches that turn into calls happen on Maps, not on JustDial's own site. JustDial's real value today is as a high-authority citation and secondary lead source, not your primary discovery channel.
That distinction changes the order you should work in:
- Google Business Profile first. This is where the map pack lives, covered in why your Google Business Profile isn't showing on Maps.
- JustDial, Sulekha, IndiaMART second. Free listings, filled in with the exact same NAP as your GBP, no more effort than a form.
- Industry-specific and city-specific directories third. A chamber of commerce, a local business association, a niche directory for your trade.
The one rule that makes all of it work: NAP consistency
Pick one exact format for your name, address and phone number and use it everywhere, character for character. Decide now whether it's "Rd" or "Road," whether you include your suite number, whether it's "+91" or "0" in front of your phone number, then stop deciding and just copy-paste the same string into every listing.
The businesses that get this wrong usually don't do it on purpose. They set up a JustDial listing in 2019, moved offices in 2022, updated their website and GBP, and forgot JustDial existed. Now there are two different addresses for the same business circulating online, and Google has to guess which one is current. A quick check (search your business name and see what comes up across JustDial, Sulekha, GBP, Facebook and your own site) usually surfaces at least one stale listing worth fixing.

Citations won't rescue a broken site
Citations are a supporting signal, not a foundation. If your website itself has basic technical problems, slow load times, no mobile-friendly layout, missing meta tags, no number of directory listings will overcome that. We go through the underlying fundamentals in how to improve your Google ranking, and if you want to see where your own site stands before spending time on directories, run a free audit. It takes about a minute and shows you the technical basics first.
The honest time cost
Building out citations is genuinely one of the lowest-effort local SEO tasks there is: it's form-filling, not strategy. A realistic first pass, GBP, JustDial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, and your top 2-3 industry directories, all with identical NAP, is an afternoon's work, not a monthly retainer line item. That makes it a good candidate for SEO on a tight budget if you're doing this yourself before ever paying an agency or a tool.

Frequently asked questions
What is a citation in local SEO?
Any place online where your business name, address and phone number appear, whether that's a directory, a listing site or a social profile. They act as corroboration that your business exists as described.
Is JustDial still worth it in India?
It still has real consumer traffic in India, so it's worth a listing for the visibility alone. Treat it as one citation among several rather than the centre of your local SEO, and keep the details consistent with everywhere else.
What does NAP consistency actually mean?
Your name, address and phone number should read identically everywhere. Small differences like St. versus Street, or an old phone number on a stale listing, weaken the corroboration those listings are supposed to provide.
How many citations do I need?
Fewer, accurate and consistent beats many and contradictory. Cover the major platforms your customers actually use, get the details identical across them, then stop rather than chasing volume.
