SEO for a diagnostic lab in India comes down to four things: a verified Google Business Profile, one web page for each test or package people actually search for, a clear page for home sample collection in every area you serve, and honest reviews. Patients type "blood test near me" or "thyroid test at home in [area]" on a phone and tap whichever lab looks closest and trustworthy. Keep your claims factual, because health content is held to a higher standard than most.

What do people search for before they book a lab test?
Almost every search is local and specific: "blood test near me", "CBC test price in Indiranagar", "home sample collection Pune", "lab open on Sunday". Some start with a symptom or a doctor's prescription and look for the test by name.
That means the first thing most patients see is your Google listing and the map, not your website. Large chains dominate the broad terms, so a single lab or a small group wins on the narrow ones: your area, your tests, your timings, home collection.
How should a diagnostic lab set up Google Business Profile?
Claim and verify the profile, choose an accurate primary category, then fill in every field honestly. Google's category names change, and we couldn't check India's live category list from here, so open your profile editor, search for "diagnostic" and "laboratory", and pick the closest match to how you work. Add secondary categories only if they're true.
Next, list your services by name (for example "thyroid profile", "full body checkup", "home sample collection"), your real opening hours including Sunday timings if you keep them, and photos of the reception, the collection room and the building entrance. Patients decide quickly whether a lab looks clean and findable.
If you collect samples only at patients' homes and have no walk-in counter, Google treats you as a service-area business. Its guidelines say to hide the address in that case and list the areas you cover. For a longer walkthrough of the profile itself, see our guide to Google Business Profile optimization in India.
Which pages should a diagnostic lab website have?
One page for each test or package people search for, and one page for each area where you do home collection. Most lab sites have a single long "Tests" list, and a list like that can't rank for any one test.
A good test page says what the test is for in plain words, whether fasting is needed, how the sample is taken, when reports usually arrive, and how to book. Put the price on the page if you're comfortable doing so, since "price" is in many of the searches. Don't give medical advice or interpret results; say that a doctor should do that.
Home-collection pages work the same way. Name the neighbourhoods you cover, the hours collection runs, and how far ahead people should book. Don't copy one page ten times with only the area name swapped, because near-identical pages tend to be treated as thin. Add a few lines that are really true for each area.
Put a phone number and a WhatsApp link at the top of every page so a patient can book in one tap.
How do you get lab reviews without breaking Google's rules?
Ask patients after a good experience, and never offer anything in return. Google's policy prohibits offering payment, discounts or free tests in exchange for a review, so "10% off your next test if you review us" is the wrong move and can get reviews removed.
What works is simple. Show a QR code at the collection counter, send the link by WhatsApp with the report, and reply to every review in plain words, including the bad ones. Wait times and report delays are the usual complaints, so answer them with specifics. Never write reviews yourself or ask staff to. How much reviews help ranking is covered in do Google reviews affect local SEO ranking.
What can a lab say on its website without getting into trouble?
Stay factual and describe what you do. We're not lawyers, and this is our reading of public sources, so check anything borderline with a healthcare lawyer.
The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 covers false and misleading advertisements, and the Central Consumer Protection Authority's 2022 guidelines apply to services as well as products. In practice, avoid "100% accurate results", "best lab in the city" and any promise about what a test will find. Don't publish patient names or reports as testimonials without written consent.
If your lab holds an accreditation such as NABL, say so and name the scope you're actually accredited for; if you don't, don't imply it. A trust signal you can prove is worth more than a vague "certified" badge.
What does local SEO for a lab cost in India?
Doing the basics yourself costs your time and nothing else: the profile, the test pages, the area pages and the reviews. We couldn't find a published agency price for diagnostic-lab SEO from a source we trust, and the agency pages we read quoted no prices, so we won't put a number on it. If an agency quotes a monthly fee, ask for the deliverables in writing, and ask what's different from what you could do in a weekend. Our piece on what a fair SEO retainer looks like in India lists the questions to ask.
One honest caution on timing: nobody can promise you a position on Google. Profile and review work tends to show first, new pages take longer, and a crowded area is slower than a smaller city.
How can you check what's wrong with your lab's site today?
Run your website through a free audit before you spend anything. It checks whether Google can read the site, whether each page has a real title and description, and whether the site loads on a phone, which is where your patients are.

If you run this for several labs or clinics, for example as a freelancer, the same audit becomes a white-label report you can send to each owner. See the sample client report to judge whether it's useful before you pay for anything.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get my diagnostic lab on Google Maps in India?
Claim and verify a Google Business Profile, choose the closest diagnostic or laboratory category your editor offers, list each service by name, add real photos and hours, and keep your name, address and phone number identical on JustDial and other listings. Then ask patients for honest reviews.
What keywords should a diagnostic lab target?
Pair each test with your area, such as "thyroid test in Baner" or "home blood test in Jayanagar". Specific searches like these are easier to win than "pathology lab" on its own, where large chains dominate.
Do I need a separate page for home sample collection?
If home collection is a real part of your service, yes. One page per area you serve, each with genuinely different detail, gives you something to rank for in each neighbourhood.
Can I show test prices on my website?
Yes, and it helps, because many searches include "price". Keep them current, and say what the price covers, such as whether home collection costs extra.
Can I offer a discount for a Google review?
No. Google's policy prohibits offering payment, discounts or free services in exchange for reviews. Ask in person or by WhatsApp and make no offer in return.
Is SEO worth it for a small diagnostic lab?
For a lab that depends on walk-ins and nearby home collection, yes, because the searches are local and the free steps cost only time. Start with the profile and reviews, and see whether SEO is worth it for a small business in India.
