"Is ₹25,000 a month a fair SEO retainer?" is the wrong question. The answer depends entirely on what's inside the ₹25,000, and most quotes are deliberately vague about that. A fair retainer isn't a number on its own. It's a number attached to a specific, checkable list of deliverables. Here's how to actually evaluate one.

Three things that decide whether a quote is fair
1. What's actually included
"SEO" is not a deliverable. A fair quote names specifics: "we'll fix X broken title tags, publish 2 blog posts, build Y backlinks, and send a monthly report with Z metrics." If your quote just says "ongoing SEO optimization," ask what that means in writing before you sign anything.
2. Who's doing the work
A ₹15,000/month retainer from a solo freelancer and a ₹15,000/month retainer from a 5-person agency team are different products at the same price. Neither is automatically better. A good freelancer often outperforms an agency's junior account manager. But you should know which one you're buying.
3. Your site's actual starting point
A site with 40 broken title tags, no meta descriptions, and a blocked robots.txt needs a different first month (often cheaper and more mechanical) than a site that's technically clean and needs a genuine content and backlink strategy. Most agencies quote the same retainer regardless. Run a free audit first so you know which situation you're actually in before you negotiate.
Typical India ranges, and what to expect at each
₹8,000 to 15,000/month, freelancer, basic tier. Reasonable expectation: on-page fixes (titles, meta descriptions, headings), Google Business Profile upkeep if you're local, one or two pieces of content, a monthly summary. Watch for vague "keyword research" line items with no output you can actually see.
₹15,000 to 30,000/month, small agency or experienced freelancer. Reasonable expectation: all of the above plus a real content calendar, some link-building activity, technical audits on a schedule, and reporting on a call rather than just email. This is the range where "fair" starts to depend on execution quality rather than price.
₹30,000 to 50,000+/month, established agency. Reasonable expectation: senior strategy, full-service execution across content, technical, and links, dedicated account management, competitive analysis. Watch for paying this rate for a small local business site that doesn't need enterprise-scale work. How much SEO costs in India breaks down where the padding usually hides.
Three questions that separate a fair quote from an inflated one
- "What specifically will you deliver in month one?" A fair answer is a list. An unfair answer is "we'll start with an audit and strategy session" with no committed output date.
- "What of this could I do myself with a tool, and what genuinely needs you?" A confident, honest answer here (rather than defensiveness) is a good sign. The honest answer, increasingly, is that a lot of the diagnosis, like broken titles, missing schema, and slow pages, is now mechanical. The retainer should reflect that human time goes toward strategy and content, not finding problems a crawl finds in minutes.
- "Can I see an example report from an existing client?" If they can't show you what monthly reporting actually looks like, that's the biggest red flag on this list. How to avoid SEO scams has the fuller set of warning signs.
When is a retainer not the right fit?
If your real need is "find what's broken and fix the mechanical stuff" rather than "run an ongoing content and link strategy," a monthly retainer is probably the wrong tool. That diagnostic-and-fix work is exactly what a low-cost tool now does for a fraction of even the cheapest freelancer retainer. DIY vs agency vs SEO tool lays out when each one makes sense, and how much an SEO audit costs covers the one-off alternative if you don't want an ongoing commitment at all.
What to get in writing before you sign
A fair SEO retainer in India isn't defined by landing in the ₹15,000 to 30,000 range. It's defined by a specific list of deliverables you can check off every month, from someone who can show you proof of past work. Get that in writing before you sign, or run a free audit first so you walk into the negotiation knowing exactly what state your site is in.
Frequently asked questions
What's a reasonable monthly SEO budget for a small Indian business?
It depends far more on what's included than on the number itself. The useful test isn't whether a quote sits in a particular range, it's whether the provider can name specific monthly deliverables and show you proof of past work.
How do I know if I'm being overcharged?
Ask what you get each month, in writing, and ask to see results for a comparable client. A provider who answers both clearly is probably fair, and one who talks about proprietary methods without specifics usually isn't.
Should I pay for SEO monthly or per project?
Monthly makes sense when there's genuinely ongoing work like content, fixes and monitoring. A one-off audit or a technical cleanup is a project, and paying a rolling retainer for work that finished in month one is the most common way people waste money here.
What should be in the contract?
A specific deliverables list, a reporting cadence, who owns the accounts and content if you part ways, and a notice period. Vague scope is where retainers quietly turn into status emails.
