SEO for a school in India comes down to being the name a parent sees when they search "CBSE school near me" or "best school in [area]" a few months before admissions open. Three things decide that: a complete Google Business Profile with the right category and real reviews, a website that answers the fee, board and safety questions a parent has before they ever call, and enquiry handling that works on WhatsApp, where most of those parents will actually message you.

Why is school SEO different from SEO for a shop or a clinic?

A school is a once-in-years decision made by two people, usually under a deadline. A parent choosing a school for Class 1 or Class 6 isn't browsing, they're building a shortlist of three or four campuses to visit, and they do most of the research before anyone from the school hears about them. Whoever is missing from that first search never gets the campus visit.

The searches also come in waves. Most private schools open registration in the months before the new session, and CBSE directs its affiliated schools to run the academic session from 1 April to 31 March, so the pressure builds in the autumn and winter before. Your own dates will differ by board, state and class, so check your own admission calendar, but the pattern holds: the work has to be done before the wave, not during it. If you start fixing your Google listing the week registrations open, you've already lost the early searchers.

What should you fix on your Google Business Profile first?

Start with the category, because it decides which searches you appear for. Google's category list includes "School", "CBSE school", "Primary school" and "Nursery school", and picking the one that matches how parents actually search (many search by board) matters more than any other single field. Use your most specific category as primary and add the others as secondary only if they're true.

Then fill in the rest properly. Add the real campus address with the right map pin, since parents use it to find their way to the visit. Put admission-office hours in, not just school hours. Upload real photos of classrooms, labs, playground and the gate, not a brochure shot. If you run more than one campus, each one needs its own profile. We walk through the whole setup in Google Business Profile optimization for India.

For trust, mention your board affiliation and make sure the number matches the public record. CBSE publishes an affiliated-schools directory that anyone can search, so a parent can check you in under a minute, and a mismatch between your site and that listing is the kind of thing that ends a shortlist quietly.

Which searches do parents actually type?

They mostly search in two ways. The first is a place plus a board: "CBSE school in Whitefield", "ICSE school near me", "best school in Indiranagar". Your profile answers those, which is why the previous section matters so much. The second is a specific question: "[school name] fees", "[school name] admission process", "[school name] reviews", "is [school name] good". Those are searches by parents who already have you on the list and are checking you out.

The second group is where most school websites lose people. If your fee structure is a scanned PDF that Google can't read, or the admission page says "contact the office" with no dates, the parent leaves with the answer from a third-party listing instead, and it may be out of date. Publish the admission process, the age or class eligibility, the documents needed and the registration dates as plain text on a page of their own. You don't have to publish exact fees if your policy is not to, but say how a parent finds out, with a number or form that gets answered the same day.

What does the website itself need?

Less than most schools think, but it has to be findable and it has to load. Parents search on their phones, often on mid-range handsets and mobile data, so a homepage with a 4 MB banner slideshow loses people before the first line reads. Compress the images and keep one clear call to action above the fold, either "Book a campus visit" or "WhatsApp the admissions office".

Give each thing a parent asks about its own page: admissions, fees, curriculum and board, facilities, transport, safety, and the faculty. A single page called "About" that tries to cover everything can't rank for any of those questions. Give every page a distinct title and description that includes the school name and the area, because a title that reads only "Home" tells Google and parents nothing.

Add structured data too. Schema.org has a School type for exactly this, and filling in the name, address, phone and website helps Google and AI assistants read the basics without guessing. Note that School sits under educational organizations in the Schema.org tree, not under local businesses, so use the type that matches what you are.

How should you handle WhatsApp enquiries?

Most Indian parents would rather message than call during school hours, so treat WhatsApp as your main enquiry channel and set it up on purpose. Use a dedicated admissions number rather than a staff member's personal phone, and put it on your website, your Google profile and your listings. Google ended its built-in chat for Business Profiles in July 2024, but where Google offers it, you can still add a WhatsApp or SMS contact option to a verified profile, so check what your profile shows.

The bigger gain is speed. A parent who messages three schools on a Sunday evening usually continues with whichever replies first. Write a short saved reply for the common questions (age eligibility, registration dates, how to book a visit) and agree who answers and by when. This costs nothing and often does more for enquiries than any ranking work.

Do reviews and listings still matter?

Yes, and for a school they matter more than for most businesses, because parents read the reviews for what other parents say about safety, teachers and how the office handles problems. Ask for reviews from parents at natural moments, such as after a parent-teacher meeting or a successful admission, and send a direct review link by message. Reply to every review, including the unhappy ones, calmly and without defending. A thoughtful reply to a complaint tells the next parent more about the school than a row of five stars.

Keep your name, address and phone number identical on JustDial, Sulekha and any local directories as well. Local business citations in India explains why exact matching matters and how to fix listings that have drifted.

Does AI search know your school exists?

Parents now also ask ChatGPT and similar assistants which school to pick in their area. Those answers draw on the same public web presence Google reads, so a school with a thin site and an unclear profile is easy to skip. Nobody can promise to be named first, but you can check whether AI tools can reach your site at all, using the steps in are you in ChatGPT?, and make sure nothing is blocking them by accident.

What does school SEO cost in India?

Prices for school SEO vary widely, so use the retainer ranges in what's a fair SEO retainer in India as a reference point instead of trusting any single quote. The question worth asking before you pay for monthly work is how much of it is one-off setup.

Most of what's described above is one-off or seasonal: claiming and completing the profile, writing the admissions and fee pages, adding schema, fixing page titles. A school administrator or a web-savvy teacher can do much of that in a few afternoons. A free SEO audit lists the technical problems on your site in plain language, so you aren't paying someone to find the same list. If you'd rather have it watched on an ongoing basis, our Starter plan is ₹2,499 a month for one site, and Growth at ₹4,999 a month covers three sites with white-label reports, which suits a trust running several campuses or someone who manages websites for several schools.

When can you skip most of this?

If your seats fill every year from sibling referrals and waiting lists, you don't need an SEO push. Do the profile, check that your fee and admission pages exist, and revisit if enquiries ever drop. A school with a long waiting list that pays a monthly retainer for rankings is paying for attention it doesn't need.

A school's first 30 days, in order

  1. Claim and verify the Google Business Profile with the category that matches your board, and add the real address, admission hours and photos.
  2. Publish plain-text admissions, fees (or how to ask), eligibility and registration dates pages.
  3. Set up a dedicated admissions WhatsApp number and saved replies, and add it to the site and profile.
  4. Match your name, address and phone number on JustDial, Sulekha and local directories.
  5. Run a free audit, fix titles, mobile speed and missing schema, then schedule a profile refresh for next admission season.

If you run a preschool or a coaching centre rather than a school, the same ideas apply with different searches: see SEO for preschools and play schools and SEO for coaching institutes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my school to show up on Google Maps?

Claim and verify your Google Business Profile, choose the category that matches your board, such as "CBSE school" or "School", add the exact campus pin, and keep your name, address and phone number the same everywhere. Recent reviews from real parents help you rank above schools with a bare listing.

When should a school start SEO work for the admission season?

Before registrations open. CBSE directs affiliated schools to run April to March sessions, and many private schools start registration in the autumn or winter before, so fix the profile and admission pages a couple of months ahead. Check your own board and state calendar for the exact dates.

Should a school publish its fees online?

You don't have to publish the exact figures, but parents search for "[school name] fees", so give them something: the fee page, or a clear way to request it with a number that is answered the same day. An empty page sends them to third-party listings with old numbers.

Does a school need a website if it has a Google Business Profile?

Yes, for the questions a profile can't answer: the admission process, curriculum, safety, and transport. The profile gets you on the shortlist, and the site helps a careful parent decide to visit.

Is WhatsApp better than a phone number for admission enquiries?

For most parents it's the easier channel, so offer both. Use a dedicated admissions number, answer quickly, and keep saved replies for common questions. Where Google offers a WhatsApp contact option on verified profiles, add it.

How much does SEO for a school in India cost?

It depends on the scope and the provider, so compare any quote with the retainer ranges in our fair-retainer guide. Much of the work is one-off setup you can do yourself, so ask what is ongoing before you agree to a monthly fee.
