Ask any SEO agency in India these five things before you sign anything: what exactly they'll deliver in month one, who on their team actually does the work, how they build links, what a monthly report looks like, and whether they've checked if AI tools like ChatGPT can already find your business. A confident, specific answer to all five is a good sign. A vague one on any of them is your answer too.

The questions that separate a real agency from a sales pitch

Every SEO sales call sounds reassuring. The difference between a real agency and a good pitch shows up in how specific the answers get once you push past the first sentence.

"What will you actually deliver in the first 30 days?" A real answer is a list: audit findings, X title tags rewritten, Y pieces of content published, a specific reporting date. A pitch answer is "we'll run an audit and build a strategy," with nothing you can check against a calendar.

"Who on your team works on my account, and how many other clients do they handle?" A ₹20,000/month retainer from a dedicated freelancer and the same price from an agency's most junior account manager, split across fifteen clients, are not the same product. Ask this directly. Hesitation here is common, and worth noticing.

"How exactly do you build backlinks, and can you name the sites?" If the answer is "a network of high-authority sites" or "proprietary partnerships" with no names offered, that's a bought-link scheme wearing a nicer name. A real link-builder can point to actual outreach: guest posts, directory listings, digital PR, and will tell you which of those it is.

"What does a monthly report look like, and can I see a real one?" Not a mockup. An actual report from an actual client (names redacted is fine). If they can't produce one, they've likely never had to justify their work to anyone before.

"Can multiple pages on my site rank for related keywords, or are we only chasing one term?" This question filters out agencies still thinking in single-keyword terms from the 2015 SEO playbook, rather than building topical coverage the way search actually works now.

"What happens if my rankings don't move in three months?" There's no honest guarantee of a ranking position; anyone promising "#1 in 30 days" is not being straight with you. What a good agency can commit to is a defined review point and a clear plan for what changes if the first approach isn't working.

"Have you worked with a business like mine before?" Industry familiarity shortens the ramp-up. It's not disqualifying if the answer is no, but if it's no, expect a slower first two months while they learn your market.

"What tools do you use, and can I get read access to the account?" Not to check their homework line by line, but because an agency that hesitates to show you the actual dashboard, whether that's Google Search Console, a rank tracker, or an SEO platform, is usually hesitant for a reason. Read access costs them nothing if the work is real.

"How do you handle local SEO and technical fixes specifically for my site?" A generic answer about "on-page optimization" isn't one. A real answer names your actual problems: a missing Google Business Profile category, a slow mobile load time, a robots.txt file blocking pages it shouldn't. If they haven't looked at your site closely enough to name something specific, they haven't done the homework the sales call implied.

What should this actually cost in India?

Real 2026 numbers, not agency marketing pages: a working freelancer or solo operator typically bills ₹10,000 to 25,000 a month for local SEO, light content, and basic technical fixes. An experienced freelancer or micro-agency runs ₹20,000 to 40,000. A small boutique agency with an actual team lands ₹25,000 to 50,000, sometimes higher for competitive metros or e-commerce. Below roughly ₹10,000, expect template-level maintenance rather than real strategy.

Price alone tells you almost nothing without knowing what's inside it. What's a fair SEO retainer in India breaks down what should actually be included at each tier, and how to spot a quote that's padded rather than priced.

The red flags that end the conversation

A few answers should stop the conversation outright: a guaranteed #1 ranking, a refusal to name their link sources, a report you can't actually read, or a bait-and-switch where the person who sold you isn't the person who does the work. How to spot an SEO scam covers the fuller list of eight warning signs, worth reading in full before you sign anything longer than a month.

The question almost no agency expects

None of the agency-vetting guides floating around, ours included until now, ask this one: "Have you checked whether AI search tools like ChatGPT or Perplexity can already find and accurately describe my business?"

Most agencies haven't, because most agencies are still selling against Google rankings alone. But a growing share of buying research now happens inside AI assistants before it ever touches a Google results page, and a business invisible there is losing customers an agency isn't even measuring. Asking this question does two things: it tells you whether the agency is thinking past 2023-era SEO, and it gives you something you can check yourself in under a minute with our free AI visibility checker, without waiting for anyone's answer.

That second part matters more than the first. Every question on this page exists because you can't otherwise verify what an agency tells you. This one you can, for free, before you even get on the call.

Or skip the vetting process entirely

Every question above exists to solve one problem: you can't see the work an agency is doing, so you're stuck cross-examining someone about it. A tool doesn't have that problem, because you're the one running it and looking at the results directly, no report to interpret, no claim to fact-check.

Run a free audit on your own site and you'll see, in plain English, exactly what's broken, no agency call required. If you want the full-site version, the 14-day trial (Growth features, one client site, no card required) crawls up to 300 pages, checks your AI visibility, and generates the actual fix for each issue rather than just flagging it. After that, Starter runs ₹2,499/month for one site, Growth ₹4,999/month for three client sites with white-label reports, and Agency ₹9,999/month for ten, less than most of the freelancer retainers above and with nothing to interrogate about who's really doing the work.

If your actual need is a genuine content and backlink strategy built by a person, a tool doesn't replace that, and no honest tool company should tell you otherwise. DIY vs an agency vs an SEO tool walks through exactly when each option earns its price.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I pay an SEO agency in India?

Realistically, ₹10,000 to 40,000 a month covers most freelancer and small-agency work for a small business. Below ₹10,000, expect basic maintenance rather than strategy; above ₹50,000, you're paying for a bigger team or a genuinely competitive market, not automatically better results.

What's the single biggest red flag when hiring an SEO agency in India?

An agency that can't show you a real client report or explain, in plain language, exactly how it builds links. Both are things a legitimate provider does without hesitation.

Can I verify an SEO agency's claims myself?

Yes, for most of what matters. A free site audit shows you the same technical issues an agency would find, and a free AI-visibility check tells you whether ChatGPT and Perplexity can already find your business, both in under a minute and before you've paid anyone.

Should I hire an SEO agency or use a tool instead?

If your bottleneck is diagnosing and fixing technical and on-page issues, a tool now does that work directly for a fraction of even the cheapest freelancer retainer. If you need original content written or genuine relationship-based link building, that's still human work an agency or freelancer does better.

How long before an SEO agency shows results?

Most legitimate timelines run three to six months for early movement and six to twelve for meaningful gains, longer in competitive categories. Anyone promising results inside a few weeks is either doing something risky or not being straight with you.
