Someone deciding where to join for "gym near me" almost never gets past Google's map pack of three listings. Winning that spot comes down to a correctly categorized Google Business Profile, a steady flow of recent reviews, a JustDial listing that matches it exactly, and a website that doesn't quietly work against all of it. None of that needs a marketing budget, and it's also the part every big-chain competitor with a bigger ad budget can't buy their way past.

Why does the map pack decide this before anyone visits your website?

Someone comparing gyms for a 6 AM slot doesn't read five homepages first. They look at the three listings Google shows on the map, check the rating, skim a couple of recent reviews, glance at the photos, and call or walk in. That's a decision made almost entirely from your Google Business Profile, not your website, which is why fixing the profile comes before touching a single page of your site.

What should the Google Business Profile actually say?

Category is the first thing to get right, and most gyms get it wrong by defaulting to a vague "Fitness Center" when schema.org (the structured-data vocabulary search engines read) actually has a dedicated type for you: ExerciseGym, sitting under SportsActivityLocation, alongside HealthClub for a broader wellness club and SportsClub for a specific sport. Match your Google category to what you actually are, gym, CrossFit box, or health club, rather than the generic option, since a mismatch is one of the more common reasons a specific gym never shows up for a specific search like "CrossFit box near [area]" even though it ranks fine for "gym near me."

Beyond category: list every facility and class by name (free weights, cardio floor, personal training, group classes, sauna, ladies-only sections if you run them), fill in every GBP attribute the dashboard offers, upload real photos of the floor, equipment and an actual class in session rather than stock imagery of a generic gym, keep membership pricing and class timings current, and answer the Q&A section yourself before a competitor plants a wrong answer there. If you run more than one branch, each location needs its own separately verified profile. One listing trying to represent two gyms typically ranks poorly for both, because Google can't tell which address a searcher actually means.

How many reviews does a gym actually need, and what's the trap?

There's no fixed number, and any guide that gives you one is guessing. What's real: prominence, one of Google's three named local-ranking factors, is built substantially from reviews, and recency counts for at least as much as total volume. A gym with a steady trickle of specific, recent reviews mentioning "personal training" or "spin classes" tends to outrank one sitting on three hundred reviews from two years ago. Do Google reviews affect local SEO ranking? covers what Google actually says versus what's SEO folklore, which matters here because gyms are especially prone to the folklore version ("you need 100 reviews to beat a chain").

The trap specific to gyms: asking every member for a review the day they sign up, when they're excited, then never asking again. Google can tell the difference between a burst of reviews from one launch month and a business that keeps earning them. Build review requests into your actual retention touchpoints, after someone hits a fitness milestone, renews a membership, or finishes a challenge, not just at signup.

Does JustDial still matter, and what about WhatsApp?

Yes, particularly outside the top metros, where a first-time member still checks JustDial before trusting an unfamiliar Google listing. Keep your gym's name, address and phone number identical across your website, Google Business Profile and JustDial; a mismatch, especially a slightly different branch address, is a common reason a specific location's ranking underperforms nearby competitors. Add a WhatsApp number for membership and trial-class queries wherever the platform lets you. Someone deciding whether to try a class this week is more likely to send "do you have a free trial this weekend?" over WhatsApp than to call and wait on hold mid-workout.

What's the mistake that actually costs gyms the most?

Running one shared Google listing for two or three branches instead of a separate, correctly addressed profile for each. It's the single most common fix we see needed when a multi-location gym's Maps ranking underperforms a single-location competitor half its size. The second most common: category drift, where a gym opened as "Health Club" years ago, added a CrossFit program, and never updated the category or added CrossFit to the services list, so it's invisible to that entire search intent.

Does the website need to do anything, or is the profile enough?

For a single-location gym, the profile usually drives more trial visits than the website does. But the site still earns its place three ways: it's where a cautious prospect checks your trainer credentials, membership tiers and class schedule before showing up, it's what surfaces for a specific search your profile can't own ("personal trainer for weight loss [city]", "24-hour gym [area]"), and it can carry ExerciseGym schema markup, which gives Google and AI search tools a structured, unambiguous read on what you are and where. The three problems we see most often on a gym's own site when it's audited: a homepage titled just "Home", no dedicated page for personal training or specific class types, and a photo gallery heavy enough to load slowly on the mobile connection someone's using to decide, mid-scroll, whether to visit.

Does AI search know your gym exists?

This is the question every generic fitness-marketing guide skips, because it assumes it doesn't come up yet. It already does. ChatGPT and Perplexity increasingly answer local prompts like "best gym near [area]" or "gym with personal training in [city]" with named recommendations, drawn from the same web presence Google reads, schema markup included. Are you in ChatGPT? or the free AI visibility checker will tell you whether an AI assistant can actually see and describe your gym, instead of you assuming it can. Nobody can guarantee an AI names you over a Cult.fit or a Gold's Gym franchise with far more web presence, but you can make sure nothing on your own site is quietly stopping it from trying.

What does gym SEO cost in India, and is hiring someone worth it?

For a single-location gym, this work sits in the ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 a month freelancer-basic-tier range covered in what's a fair SEO retainer in India, mostly for Google Business Profile management, review requests and listing consistency, work a gym owner or front-desk manager can genuinely do directly once it's set up correctly. Where a freelancer or agency earns that fee is showing up every month to chase reviews and catch a drifted listing while you're running the floor; where it doesn't is charging a full retainer for what was really a few hours of one-time setup.

If what you actually want is that setup checked continuously with a report you can glance at, Starter runs ₹2,499 a month for one location, and Growth (₹4,999 a month, three sites) covers a small multi-branch gym without a full agency retainer.

Where do you actually stand right now?

Run your site through a free SEO audit. It checks your page titles, meta descriptions, mobile speed, schema markup and basic security in about a minute, then hands you a plain-language list of what to fix first, no jargon. If your Google Business Profile isn't fully built out yet, start there before the website; a correctly categorized, photo-complete profile with a steady review flow will get a new gym its first trial visits faster than a redesigned website will.

Frequently asked questions

What Google category should a gym use?

Match it to what you actually are: ExerciseGym is the closest schema.org type for a standard gym, HealthClub fits a broader wellness club, and SportsClub fits a facility built around one sport. Avoid the generic "Fitness Center" category if a more specific match exists in your Google Business Profile dashboard, since it's a common reason gyms don't show up for specific searches like "CrossFit box near me."

How do I get my gym to show up in Google's map pack?

Fully build out your Google Business Profile with the correct category, every facility and class listed by name, real photos, and current pricing and timings, keep your name, address and phone number identical across Google and JustDial, and build a steady flow of recent, specific reviews rather than a one-time burst.

Does JustDial still matter for a gym in India?

Outside the largest metros, yes, particularly for a first-time member checking an unfamiliar gym before visiting. Keeping the listing identical to your Google Business Profile costs nothing and prevents conflicting signals that can hurt both listings.

How many Google reviews does a gym need to rank well?

There's no fixed number that guarantees ranking. Recency and a steady pace across your actual retention touchpoints, not just at signup, matter more than a single large burst of reviews.

What schema markup should a gym's website use?

ExerciseGym, a schema.org type under SportsActivityLocation and LocalBusiness, is the dedicated type for a standard gym. It helps Google and AI search tools understand what you are and where, more precisely than the generic LocalBusiness type most gym sites default to.

Can a gym show up in ChatGPT or AI search results?

It's possible, since AI assistants increasingly answer local prompts using the same web presence and schema markup Google reads, but nothing guarantees it names a small independent gym over a major chain. Checking whether an AI assistant can currently see and describe your gym at all is the useful first step.

How much does SEO cost for a gym in India?

A single-location gym typically sits in the ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 a month range for freelancer-level work, mostly Google Business Profile management, review generation and listing consistency, work you can also do in-house once it's set up correctly.

Should a multi-branch gym use one Google listing or separate ones?

Separate, fully verified listings for each branch address. One shared listing trying to represent multiple locations typically ranks poorly for all of them, since Google can't confidently match a searcher's location to the right one.
