Most patients now pick a clinic from three names on a map, not ten blue links. Winning that "local pack" for a doctor or clinic in India comes down to four things: a fully verified Google Business Profile with the right medical category, a steady and honest flow of patient reviews, consistent listings on the directories patients actually check (Practo, JustDial, Lybrate), and a website that doesn't quietly undo all of that work. None of it requires a marketing team.

Why does Google Maps matter more here than for most businesses?

Nobody browses dermatologists for fun. Someone searches "dentist near me" or "pediatrician in [their area]" because they need one soon, and they'll call whoever shows up first with a real address, recent reviews and a phone that gets answered. That's a map-pack fight, not an organic-rankings fight, and the map pack is won mostly through your Google Business Profile, not your homepage.

What should you fix on your profile first?

Claim and verify the listing if you haven't (a claimed-but-unverified profile is one of the most common reasons a clinic doesn't show up at all). Then get the basics exactly right: the most specific medical category you can find ("Dermatologist," not "Doctor" or "Clinic"), your actual service area, real photos of the clinic and staff rather than stock images, and hours that are actually current, including when you're closed for a festival. If you run more than one branch, each location needs its own separate, correctly categorized profile rather than one listing trying to cover every address.

How many reviews does a clinic actually need?

There's no real number, and any guide that gives you one ("aim for exactly 50 reviews") is guessing, not reporting a Google rule. What is real: prominence, one of Google's three named local-ranking factors, is built substantially from reviews, and recency counts for at least as much as total volume. A clinic with a steady trickle of recent, specific reviews will usually out-rank one sitting on a large pile of old, generic ones. Ask every patient for a review right after a good visit, while it's easy to say yes, and reply to every review you get, including the bad ones; an answered complaint reads as a clinic that takes patient concerns seriously, an ignored one just sits there.

Do Practo, JustDial and Lybrate still matter?

Yes, and for healthcare specifically they matter more than for most local businesses, because patients in India genuinely comparison-shop doctors on Practo and Lybrate before they ever open Google Maps. List your clinic on Practo, JustDial, Lybrate and Sulekha with the exact same name, address, phone number and doctor name as your Google Business Profile. We cover why that exact-match consistency matters, and how to fix it when it's drifted, in local business citations in India. A WhatsApp number for appointment queries is worth adding wherever the platform allows it; it's how a lot of Indian patients would rather ask a quick question than call.

Does your website need to do anything, or is the profile enough?

For a single-location clinic, the profile usually drives more calls than the website does. But a website still matters for three reasons: it's where a cautious patient double-checks you're legitimate before booking, it's what surfaces for a specific search your Google Business Profile can't own ("root canal cost," "same-day dermatologist appointment"), and it can carry MedicalClinic or Physician schema markup that gives Google (and increasingly AI search) a structured, unambiguous read on who you are and where. In practice, the most common problems we see when a clinic's site gets audited are generic page titles (every page titled "Home"), no mention of the specific neighbourhoods or conditions treated, and a mobile experience that's slow to load standing in a waiting room on 4G.

Does AI search know about your clinic too?

This is the part every local-SEO guide for doctors skips, and it's becoming a real second front. When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity "who's a good pediatrician in [their area]," that answer is increasingly pulled from the same web presence Google reads, not a separate one. Are you in ChatGPT? walks through how to actually check whether AI assistants can see and cite your practice, rather than guessing. The honest version of this: nobody can promise an AI will name your clinic, but you can make sure nothing on your site is actively blocking it from trying.

What's the fastest way to see where you actually stand?

Run your site through a free SEO audit. It checks page titles, meta descriptions, mobile usability, page speed, schema markup and basic security in about a minute, then hands you a plain-language list of what to fix first instead of a stack of jargon. If you don't have a website yet, a fully verified Google Business Profile with consistent directory listings is still a legitimate place to start; add the site once the profile and reviews are working.

What if your listing isn't showing on Maps at all?

That's a different, more specific problem than general ranking, usually a duplicate listing, an unverified claim, or a category that's drifted from what you actually practice. Why your Google Business Profile isn't showing on Maps walks through the fixes: check for a duplicate under an old address, confirm you're verified rather than just claimed, and make sure your category still matches your specialty.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my clinic to show up in Google's local map pack?

Claim and fully verify your Google Business Profile with the right medical category, real photos and an accurate service area, build a steady flow of recent, specific patient reviews, and keep your clinic's name, address and phone number identical across Google, Practo, JustDial and Lybrate.

Is Practo more important than Google Business Profile for a clinic in India?

They do different jobs. Practo is where patients compare doctors and book; your Google Business Profile is what most people see first when they search on Maps or in Search. You need both, and they need to agree with each other on every detail.

How many Google reviews does a doctor need to rank well?

There's no fixed number that guarantees ranking. Recency and a steady pace matter more than a single burst of reviews, and responding to every review is a signal on its own, not just good manners.

Can a multi-branch clinic have one Google Business Profile for all locations?

No. Each verified address needs its own separate profile with its own category, photos, hours and reviews. One listing trying to represent several branches usually gets suppressed or ranks poorly for all of them.

Does a clinic's website actually need SEO if the Google Business Profile is strong?

The profile does most of the work for "near me" searches, but a website still matters for specific-condition searches, schema markup that helps both Google and AI assistants understand your practice, and giving a cautious patient a way to verify you before they call.
