IndiaMART wins on speed; SEO wins on ownership. A paid IndiaMART catalog can put buyer enquiries in your seller panel this week, but those BuyLeads are shared with other suppliers and the visibility disappears when you stop paying. Ranking your own site for the product searches buyers already type into Google costs more patience up front and compounds into leads that arrive on your domain alone.

If you're staring at a renewal invoice and wondering whether another year of marketplace fees is still the right bet, this is the honest split: keep IndiaMART as a volume top-up if it still closes orders, but treat SEO (Google Business Profile + your own site) as the channel you actually own.

What IndiaMART is actually selling you

IndiaMART is India's largest B2B marketplace. Buyers post requirements; suppliers list products and buy access to those leads. A free seller account exists, but the visibility and BuyLead quotas that matter sit behind paid catalogs.

IndiaMART's own help pages (prices exclusive of taxes) currently list entry paid tiers like this: Mini Dynamic Catalog (MDC) at ₹35,000 for one year, TrustSEAL Pro at ₹60,000 for one year, and Maximiser Pro at ₹85,000 for one year. Higher quote-only tiers (IM Star Pro, IM Leader Pro, and similar) sit above that. Packages and list prices move, so treat the live IndiaMART help or your account manager quote as the commercial source of truth, not a blog post from last year.

What you're buying is reach inside their search results and a weekly BuyLead allocation. You are not buying a Google ranking for your own brand, and you are not buying an exclusive lead.

Why the same BuyLead reaches your competitors

IndiaMART says this in plain language on its help site: a BuyLead is filtered and shared with suppliers dealing in that product, and once a buyer's requirement goes live they "will be contacted by multiple suppliers." IndiaMART's seller-portal expiry rule also states a BuyLead expires after it has been purchased by the sixth supplier. So the same requirement can be consumed by up to six sellers before it drops off.

That design is why IndiaMART feels busy and why conversion feels hard. You're often racing on price and response speed against several other factories who got the same RFQ the same morning. The channel still works for many manufacturers. It just isn't the exclusive inbound lead people imagine when they hear "we got a lead."

What SEO actually means for a manufacturer

For a factory or trading business, SEO is not a blog hobby. It means three concrete assets:

  1. A complete Google Business Profile for your plant or office, so Maps and local search show you for city + product queries.
  2. Product and capability pages on your own website that match how buyers search ("SS 304 pipe fittings manufacturer Coimbatore", "injection moulding job work Pune", grade and tolerance language, not vague "our products").
  3. Consistent citations on directories that still matter in India, including a basic IndiaMART listing used as a citation and secondary lead source, not as your only funnel. We cover that NAP consistency work in local business citations in India.

SEO is slower to start. Most manufacturers shouldn't expect serious organic enquiry volume in week one. The trade is that a ranking on your domain is an asset you keep after the marketplace invoice stops.

IndiaMART vs SEO, side by side

IndiaMART (paid catalog)SEO on your own site
Typical cash outlayFrom ₹35,000/year (MDC) to ₹60,000–₹85,000+ for TrustSEAL / Maximiser Pro, excl. taxTime + site fixes; a guided tool like RankAgent Starter is ₹2,499/mo if you want software help
Speed to first enquiryFast, often days once you're visibleWeeks to months for organic
Who owns the leadShared with other suppliers who consume the same BuyLeadYours alone when they land on your site
What happens if you cancelPaid visibility and catalog benefits drop; history lives on their platformRankings and pages stay on your domain
Best atVolume, price-shoppers, categories where buyers still start on marketplacesSpec-led buyers who search product + place, brand trust, repeat RFQs

Neither column is "wrong." The mistake is running only the left column for five years and wondering why every deal is a price war.

When IndiaMART is still the right spend

Keep (or renew) a paid IndiaMART plan when:

  • Your category still generates closed orders from BuyLeads after you track cost per won job, not cost per enquiry.
  • You're early and have no website worth ranking yet. A marketplace listing beats a blank Google search for your company name.
  • You need volume while SEO compounds. IndiaMART as a tapering top-up, not as the whole strategy, is the sane stack.

Drop or downgrade when most "leads" are tire-kickers, traders, or RFQs you've already lost on price six times that week, and you still don't own a single high-intent landing page for the products you actually make.

When SEO is the better long-term bet

SEO pulls ahead when a buyer searching Google (or asking ChatGPT) for a specific capability should land on you, not on an IndiaMART results page that lists you next to fifteen rivals. That's the rent-vs-own argument in one sentence.

It's also the cheaper compounding path once the site is fixed. Agency SEO retainers for Indian SMBs often sit in the ₹15,000–₹50,000/month band depending on scope (how much SEO costs in India and fair SEO retainer ranges). A manufacturer who only needed diagnosis and a fix list does not need that retainer on day one. Run a free crawl first; buy human strategy later if the leftover work is content and outreach, not missing titles and broken pages.

The same logic as JustDial vs Google Business Profile applies here: directories and marketplaces are paid channels on someone else's land. Google Business Profile and your site are the free (or low-cost) foundation.

A practical stack that doesn't force a false choice

You don't have to cancel IndiaMART tomorrow to "do SEO."

  1. Claim and finish Google Business Profile for every real location. Free.
  2. Keep a basic IndiaMART listing with the exact same name, address, phone and GST details as your site and GBP.
  3. Publish one serious page per major product or process you sell, with specs, MOQ, certifications and a WhatsApp or form path.
  4. Audit the site so technical junk isn't blocking the pages you just wrote.
  5. Renew paid IndiaMART only if last year's closed-order math still clears the invoice. If it doesn't, downgrade while organic grows.

If you're comparing DIY, an agency and a tool for the work on your own site, DIY vs agency vs SEO tool is the sibling breakdown. For early-stage cash constraints, SEO help for Indian startups maps the same decision at founder budgets.

Where RankAgent fits (and where it doesn't)

We build RankAgent. Bias stated. What we actually sell for this problem is the middle path: crawl your manufacturer site, score what's broken, and hand you plain-English fixes (titles, meta, schema, technical issues) so Google can find the capability pages that should replace rented BuyLeads over time. Starter is ₹2,499/mo (or ₹24,990/year with two months free), cancel anytime, with a 14-day free trial of the full feature set and no card required to start.

What we don't do: we won't run your IndiaMART seller panel, write fifty product datasheets for you, or guarantee RFQs in 30 days. If your site is a one-page brochure with no product URLs, fix the site structure first. If every order still comes from WhatsApp referrals and you never get searched, marketplace volume may still out-earn SEO for a while. Honesty beats a forced upgrade.

See pricing or the agency demo report if you're a freelancer packing this for a manufacturing client.

Frequently asked questions

Is IndiaMART better than SEO? For fast shared enquiries, often yes. For exclusive leads and long-term brand search, SEO on your own site wins. Most manufacturers should run a basic marketplace listing plus SEO, then cut paid marketplace spend only after organic closes real jobs.

How much does IndiaMART cost for sellers? From IndiaMART's help pages (exclusive of taxes): MDC ₹35,000/year, TrustSEAL Pro ₹60,000/year, Maximiser Pro ₹85,000/year, with higher tiers sold on quote. Confirm on the live help pages or with your account manager before renewing.

Are IndiaMART BuyLeads exclusive? No. IndiaMART documents that requirements are shared with multiple suppliers, and a BuyLead can be purchased by up to six suppliers before it expires on the seller portal.

Should manufacturers leave IndiaMART completely? Usually no, not cold. Keep a free or lower-tier listing for citation and leftover volume, build Google Business Profile and product pages in parallel, then renew paid only if closed-order ROI still holds.

How long until SEO brings manufacturing enquiries? Plan in months, not days. Technical fixes and product pages can move indexing quickly; consistent enquiry volume from organic search typically needs sustained pages and trust signals. Marketplace volume fills the gap while that compounds.

Can I use IndiaMART and still rank on Google? Yes. In fact IndiaMART pages often rank for industrial queries themselves. Your job is to earn rankings for your domain on the same queries, so the buyer lands on you instead of a multi-vendor results page.
