How to Use Claude (and Other AI) for SEO Audits — Honestly

Large language models like Claude and ChatGPT are genuinely useful for SEO — but not in the way most people expect. Ask one to "audit my website" and paste a URL, and it will often hand you back a confident, professional-looking report that is partly made up. Used the right way, though, AI can save you hours on the parts of an audit that used to be slow and painful.

The trick is knowing the line between what AI is brilliant at and what it simply cannot do. Here's how to use Claude (or any AI assistant) for an SEO audit without getting burned.

The one thing to understand first

An AI chat model is a language engine, not a measurement engine. On its own, in a normal chat window, it cannot:

  • Crawl your live website or reliably read a page you just paste a link to.
  • Measure your speed or Core Web Vitals.
  • See your real Google rankings or your Search Console data.
  • Know if a fact is true — it predicts plausible-sounding text, so if you ask about a page it can't actually read, it will often invent titles, meta tags and issues that don't exist.

That last one is the trap. The report looks authoritative, so people act on it. If AI describes an "issue" on a page it never truly accessed, you can waste an afternoon fixing a problem you never had.

So the golden rule is: bring AI the real data. Don't ask it to go get the data itself.

What AI is genuinely great at

Once you feed it real information, Claude and ChatGPT are excellent at the interpretive, wordy parts of SEO — the parts that used to need an expert:

  • Explaining issues in plain English. Paste a technical finding ("multiple H1 tags, missing canonical") and ask it to explain why that matters for a non-technical business owner. It's very good at this.
  • Writing the fixes. Drafting a better page title within the character limit, rewriting a meta description so it earns clicks, generating JSON-LD schema markup, or writing alt text for a list of images. This is where AI saves the most time.
  • Prioritising. Give it your list of issues and ask it to sort them into "fix now," "fix soon," and "nice to have," with a reason for each.
  • Finding content gaps. Paste your page and a competitor's and ask what topics or questions you're missing.
  • Turning a keyword into an outline. "Here's my target keyword and audience — draft an article outline that answers the real questions searchers have."

The right workflow: data first, then AI

Here's a workflow that actually works:

  1. Get the raw facts. Run a proper crawl or audit tool, or pull your real numbers from Google Search Console. You want actual data: which pages are indexed, real page titles, real load times, the real list of issues.
  2. Hand that data to the AI. Paste the findings into Claude and give it a clear role and task.
  3. Let it interpret and draft. Ask it to explain, prioritise, and write the fixes — then you review them before anything goes live.

Step three is not optional. AI drafts; a human approves. It won't know your business facts, and it shouldn't invent them.

Prompts that work

A few starting points you can adapt (replace the bracketed parts with your real data):

"You're an SEO expert explaining to a non-technical small business owner. Here are the issues found on my homepage: [paste findings]. For each, explain in one plain sentence why it matters and what to do."

"Here is my current page title and meta description: [paste]. My target keyword is [keyword] and my audience is [who]. Write three better versions of each — the title under 60 characters, the description under 160."

"Here are the issues from my site audit: [paste list]. Sort them into Critical, Warning, and Nice-to-have, and give me a one-line reason for each ranking."

Notice that every good prompt gives the AI the real data. That's the whole game.
