ChatGPT recommends businesses it can verify, not the ones with the best-written homepage. It leans on your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your JustDial listing, and anything independent written about you that says roughly the same thing your own site does. If you're doing this from India, skip the advice you'll find in most guides to claim and fix your Bing Places page first. Bing barely registers here. Put that effort into Google Business Profile, real reviews, and a website that answers the exact questions your customers ask instead.

How does ChatGPT actually decide which business to mention?

It works from two sources: what it already "knows" from training, and, for roughly a third of queries, a live web search it runs in the background. Either way, it leans hardest on information it can cross-check in more than one place. A business whose name, address, category and hours say the same thing on its website, its Google Business Profile and a couple of directories reads as real. A business with different phone numbers on three different pages reads as noise, and noise doesn't get quoted.

That's a different game than ranking on Google. A search results page is a list, being fifth still gets you clicks. An AI answer names two or three businesses and moves on, so being the fifth-most-corroborated option is the same as not existing.

Should you fix your Bing Places listing first?

Almost every "get recommended by ChatGPT" guide online opens with the same advice: claim your Bing Places listing, because ChatGPT's live search runs on Bing's index for a large share of its web lookups. That's genuinely good advice in the US, where Bing carries a real audience.

It's close to useless here. Checked this week: Bing holds around 1.2% of search traffic in India, against roughly 98% for Google. There's barely a local Bing index for a live ChatGPT search to draw on for an Indian query in the first place. We read through the top guides currently ranking for this topic while writing this piece, including one written by an Indian agency, and all of them ran the same US checklist: Bing Places, Yelp, Apple Maps. None mentioned JustDial, none mentioned that Bing's India footprint is a rounding error. If you're spending an afternoon updating a Bing listing for a shop in Pune or Chennai, that's an afternoon better spent on the profile that actually carries weight.

What actually gets an Indian business mentioned?

Four things, roughly in order of impact:

  • A complete, verified Google Business Profile. Category, hours, service list, photos, and every question in the Q&A section actually answered. This is the primary discovery surface AI tools lean on for local queries in India now, ahead of directories.
  • A synced JustDial listing. JustDial is still the largest dedicated local directory in India by listings and traffic, and it's worth keeping current, especially for Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities where it still drives more calls than Maps. We wrote a full walkthrough on getting your JustDial listing and citations right.
  • The same facts everywhere. Name, address, phone number and category should read identically on your website, GBP, JustDial, and anywhere else you're listed. Inconsistent details fragment you into what looks like several different businesses; consistent ones consolidate into one the model can trust.
  • Independent mentions. A line in a local news roundup, an industry association listing, a trade directory. These matter because they're proof someone other than you is vouching for the facts.

Do your Google reviews really change what ChatGPT says about you?

Yes. Reviews are one of the strongest trust signals available to any AI system trying to judge whether a business is legitimate and good at what it does, star rating, how recent they are, and whether they mention specific services rather than just "great work, thanks." A pile of five-star reviews that all read like they were written in one sitting reads as suspicious, and AI models are increasingly good at spotting that pattern. We go deeper on exactly how reviews affect ranking, on Google and on AI answers, in do Google reviews affect your local SEO ranking.

Does your website need to change?

A little, not a rebuild. The single most effective change is putting the actual question a customer would ask, "best [your service] in [your city]," on the relevant page and answering it directly in the first sentence, not three paragraphs in. That's the sentence a model can lift and repeat. Light structured data (schema markup that tells a machine "this is a local business, here's the address and hours") helps too, but it's a supporting signal, not the thing that gets you mentioned on its own.

How long before this actually shows up?

Nobody, including the agencies selling this as a service, can hand you a reliable number, and we're not going to invent one either. What we can tell you honestly: it moves over months of consistent listing accuracy and review growth, not days. There's no single change that flips a switch. If someone promises you'll be showing up in ChatGPT answers within a week, that's the same red flag as "guaranteed #1 on Google," and worth the same skepticism.

How do you check if ChatGPT already knows about you?

The manual way costs nothing: open ChatGPT and ask it the way a customer would, "best [your category] near [your city]," and see whether you're named. Run it a few times, the answer isn't the same every time. The faster way is our free AI visibility checker, which asks a set of customer-style questions about your business and reports back whether you're mentioned and who's getting named instead.

Mistakes that keep businesses invisible

The same handful of things show up again and again. A GBP and a JustDial listing with different phone numbers or hours. Negative reviews left unanswered for months, which reads as neglect rather than just a bad day. A robots.txt file quietly blocking GPTBot or other AI crawlers, so the site is invisible no matter how good it is, we walk through how to check that in how to check if ChatGPT can see your website. And website copy so vague it never actually answers the question a customer typed.

Where to put your time first

If you only do four things: complete and verify your Google Business Profile, keep your JustDial listing in sync with it, actively collect and respond to reviews on both, and rewrite your two or three most important pages to answer the real question a customer would ask in the first sentence. Skip the Bing Places checklist unless you're also selling into markets where Bing actually matters.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get recommended by ChatGPT in India?

Keep your Google Business Profile and JustDial listing complete and identical on every detail, collect and respond to genuine reviews, and make sure your website answers the specific questions customers ask in plain language near the top of the page. Skip the US-centric advice to prioritize Bing Places, it carries almost no weight for Indian search.

Does ChatGPT use Bing for India searches?

ChatGPT's live web search leans on Bing's index in general, but Bing's actual footprint in India is around 1.2% of search traffic against Google's roughly 98%. That means there's very little India-specific data in Bing's index for ChatGPT to draw on here, so fixing a Bing Places listing has far less payoff than it would in the US.

Is JustDial or Google Business Profile more important for AI visibility in India?

Google Business Profile is the bigger lever today, it's the primary place AI tools and Google Maps pull local business data from. JustDial is still the largest dedicated local directory in India and worth keeping current, particularly outside the biggest metros, but treat it as the second listing to get right, not the first.

Can I pay to get recommended by ChatGPT?

No. There's no sponsored placement, ad auction or submission process for an organic AI answer. Anyone promising guaranteed mentions is selling the same thing as "guaranteed #1 on Google in a week."

How do I know if I'm actually being recommended by ChatGPT in India right now?

Ask it directly, the way a customer would, "best [your service] in [your city]," a few times, since answers vary between runs. Or run our free AI visibility checker for a faster read with less guesswork.
